Milkmaid Braids And Plaiting 2009 Spring Hair Trend

We love this look:

Milkmaid braids. And this is the hottest 2009 Spring hair trend! Bohemian beauties like Nicole Richie wear this style so well. It looks effortless and polished

Lovely Sienna Miller (shown below) was the first red carpet beauty to rock the milkmaid braid in 2007, and got criticized for her 'unfinished hair-do.'

Well, braiding and plaiting are all the rage this Spring, so find a friend to help you get the perfect look. And the top stylists say that all kinds of braids are hot. Thin. Thick. French braids.

We used to french braid our cousin's long blond hair years ago, and she looked so neat, fresh, and elegant.

The key to a good braid equals: long hair or a well-matching extension, or hair piece.

Stylists say that braids look good on most women. We tend to believe the milkmaid braid, however, really looks spectacular on blondes. For some reason, it seems to go best with flaxen-hair women. That's not to say that redheads or brunettes can't wear them, because Hollywood hotties are everywhere sporting braids.....Rachel Bilson. Jennifer Aniston. Molly Sims. Lauren Conrad.

It's an easy hair trend to achieve with a little practice, and it goes dressed up or dressed down. And now braids are elegant enough for the red carpet.

Stem Cells To Build Bigger Breasts In UK Women

We didn't think this would happen so soon in the world of beauty and medical science?!

The Brits are keeping 'abreast' of this amazing and potentially controversial new development.

This tidbit in the Timesonline:

"A STEM cell therapy offering “natural” breast enlargement is to be made available to British women for the first time.

The treatment could boost cup size while reducing stomach fat. It involves extracting stem cells from spare fat on the stomach or thighs and growing them in a woman’s breasts. An increase of one cup size is likely, with the potential for larger gains as the technique improves."

What we like, is the trial underway at the moment, for British women who have had cancerous lumps removed. Stem cells are being used to 'build' or repair their breasts.

Interestingly enough, however, don't expect the new stem cell breasts to have the look of breast implants. In other words, this new stem cell therapy is able to restore volume to the breasts, but not firmness or uplift. Even so, it is still a groundbreaking procedure.

The Times article goes on to say this from Professor Kefah Mokbel, a consultant breast surgeon at the Princess Grace Hospital in London:

“This is a very exciting advance in breast surgery,” said Mokbel. “They [breasts treated with stem cells] feel more natural because this tissue has the same softness as the rest of the breast.” He said the treatment offered the potential of considerable improvement on implants: “Implants are a foreign body. They are associated with long-term complications and require replacement. They can also leak and cause scarring.”

The new stem cell procedure will later be offered to healthy UK women for cosmetic enhancement, and that is where the controversy could get deeper.

Avoid Makeup Meltdown With L'Oreal Infallible Collection

You've heard of makeup meltdown.

We've all been there.

You apply your makeup. Then go. A few hours later, well, your face doesn't look as fresh anymore.

Maybe your eyeliner has headed south. Or possibly your undereye concealer has settled into some dry, fine lines. Or your foundation has sunk into your pores, exposing the little things you didn't want people to see.

Makeup meltdown occurs to the best of us---even beautiful celebrities. Our skin's natural oils are the major culprit here. Then again, the elements can ruin a fresh face--like wind, heat and humidity, cold, dry air.

L'Oreal has a makeup collection they swear "puts an end to makeup meltdown."

And the newest addition to their collection is the Infallible Never Fail Powder ($14.29, drugstores). For 16 hours of matte perfection.

L'Oreal's Infallible Never Fail Makeup Collection features advanced makeup with highly-resistant pigments, bold liners, hydrating lipcolors and shining glosses. Formulated to stand up to all-day activity.

The beauty of the new Infallible Never Fail Powder is its lightweight feel and texture on the skin. With an SPF of 20 and available in 6 shades, this little compact is worth checking out.

And also give your lips a treat with the Infallible Never Fail LipGloss ($9.99). For 6 hours of lasting color. The gloss is easy to use with its cute heart-shaped wand. The consistency is not heavy and gooey, thank goodness. And it comes in 16 luscious shades.

Cate Blanchett Keeping Skin Luminous With SK-II

Cate Blanchett, Academy Award-winning actress, is said to have beautiful and luminous skin. And we believe what folks are saying.

Just look at the photo, taken a few months ago. You can always get a pretty good idea of how well someone is aging, by looking closely at them out in the sunlight. The sun has a blunt way of showing all our nooks and crannies, or fine lines and wrinkles.

Cate Blanchett turns 40 this May, and we have to admit, the woman looks darn good, even in the harsh rays of the sun.

What is Cate's beauty secret?

SK-II Skin care.

With Pitera. It is the signature ingredient in all SK-II products, and is 'the secret key' to beautiful skin.

Pitera, what you ask?

It's a very interesting story. According to their website, Pitera, was discovered purely by chance.

About thirty years ago, a scientist noticed that the hands of older workers at a Japanese saké brewery looked beautiful and young.

The workers were handling the fermenting sake.

For five years, scientists did research on over 300 types of yeast, to refine the precise conditions for fermentation. This all resulted in Pitera.

Derived from a unique yeast's fermentation, Pitera is a blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids that work together to allow the skin's natural surface rejuvenation process to function at its prime, enhancing the renewal of the skin's outer layer. Continued usage of Pitera leads to clearer looking, smoother skin.

Cate Blanchett has supposedly been using SK-II Skin care products for 7 years now, and swears by their effectiveness. In fact, Cate is now the global spokesperson for the SK-II line.

'Throughout my career, I have only accepted roles that I am passionate about, and my partnership with SK-II is no different. I truly believe I already played this role as an ambassador long before SK-II caught up with me,' Cate Blanchett said.

You can see her face in all the current advertisements for SK-II. The skin care treatments can be found at Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

Kim Kardashian Says Photoshopping Common In Hollywood

Hollywood hottie Kim Kardashian is right:

"How many people do you think are photoshopped? It happens all the time!" she writes, later adding, "I'm proud of my body and my curves and this picture coming out is probably helpful for everyone to see that just because I am on the cover of a magazine doesn't mean I'm perfect."

That's what Kim wrote on her blog yesterday, after 'before and after' photos from a spread for Complex magazine got out over the internet. Pics that show the curvy beauty 'before' with cellulite, and 'after' with none. That's called photoshopping, and Kim Kardashian is correct. Photoshopping is done all the time on many beautiful and not-so-beautiful celebrities.
http://kimkardashian.celebuzz.com/2009/03/yes-i-am-complex.php

Meantime, we admire Kim K's honesty. She even admits to having a little dimpled fat:

"So what: I have a little cellulite. What curvy girl doesn't!?"

And lovely Kim K is not alone. Yesterday, in our BeautyTipToday article about Cindy Crawford, the iconic model also admitted to some dimpled fat:

CINDY CRAWFORD: I think I look pretty good for 43. But I don't look the way I did when I was 23. So if Star magazine or whatever wants to print a picture of me on the beach from the back, at the worst possible angle, and say that I have cellulite, I'm like, Guess what? I do, and I never said I didn't. I've had two kids, and I'm 43, so leave me alone.

Come on, vicious people, stop picking on women's bodies, and pointing out every little, tiny, human flaw.

Attacking women and then calling them fat, is really disturbing. Kim Kardashian is curvy. And the clothing she sells from her closet on Ebay, are all listed at size 2 or 4. So to call her zaftig is really stretching it.

Even Katie Couric was photoshopped in her picture for the evening news when she first got the job. The photos had slenderized her waist, making her appear much slimmer. And Katie is quite petite to begin with.

Photoshopping is common in the world of beauty. But then again, most of it is sheer fantasy. So why are people surprised when they see that celebrities have pimples, scars, cellulite, etc?

No one's perfect. And thank goodness, for that.

Cindy Crawford's Smart Anti-Aging Beauty Tips Revealed

There's a lot of buzz these days about 43-year-old Cindy Crawford nude in the April issue of Allure magazine.

And the famous former model is revealing some smart anti-aging beauty tips. We say 'smart,' because Cindy Crawford is. She wasn't the high school valedictorian for nothing. Beauty and brains....a lethal combination.

Cindy Crawford has always been an intelligent woman. She has admitted she was never the tiny size 2 model floating down the runways. She kept in shape, but never let the ultra-skinny model philosophy dominate her lifestyle. She has mentioned being a size 6 and at times a size 8.

In other words---healthy skinny. A model with curves. How refreshing!

The photos in the April issue of Allure are quite stunning. Cindy Crawford proves at 40-something, it ain't over yet, ladies. And she's a mom of two.

We adored reading Cindy Crawford's smart, anti-aging beauty tips. We've included part of Allure's interview:

ALLURE: How do you feel about your age, in general?

CINDY CRAWFORD: I think I look pretty good for 43. But I don't look the way I did when I was 23. So if Star magazine or whatever wants to print a picture of me on the beach from the back, at the worst possible angle, and say that I have cellulite, I'm like, Guess what? I do, and I never said I didn't. I've had two kids, and I'm 43, so leave me alone.

ALLURE: How do you take care of your skin?

CINDY CRAWFORD: I use a day cream with antioxidants and sunscreen, a night cream, and an eye cream.I do masks once a week, and I get microdermabrasion once a month. I'm pretty diligent with microdermabrasion because I've noticed a big difference in the texture of my skin from it. Basically, I take care of myself, but I don't want to be obsessive, and I don't want to not like who I am today. I'm all for fighting the good fight, but I don't care how much you work out or how much cream you put on-things change.

ALLURE: Are there any areas you take particularly good care of?

CINDY CRAWFORD: My hands and my décolleté. In L.A., there are 65-year-old women walking around in Juicy sweatpants, and from the back, you'd think they were 20. But when you see their hands or their neck, you know. When I put moisturizer on my face, I use a little extra so that I have enough to cover my hands. Most people don't start caring about the décolleté until it's too late, but I'm religious about it.

ALLURE: Do you try to keep your hair young looking?

CINDY CRAWFORD: Color is the most important factor. You can get any plastic surgery in the world, but hair color is what enables women to look younger longer. I've also become more aware of hair health. I stay away from razor cuts because they can make my hair look frizzy, and I give myself a hair treatment while I'm in my sauna to keep it conditioned.

New Lancome Genifique Skin Care C'est Magnifique

Discover the skin you were born to have.

We like the sound of that. And beauty giant Lancome is saying just that, about it's newest anti-aging skin care product:

Genifique ($78, 1 oz, at fine department stores).

We like to tell you about the newest beauty treatments that promise to make you look younger. Often these new products have clinical trials to back them up. And although all these topical treatments can diminish some of the damage we have received to our faces and bodies over time, anti-aging skin care products cannot take the place of a facelift. But then again, many women wouldn't want to go that cosmetic route to begin with.

So here we are again----Lancome is more than happy to crow about a wonderful new serum that hopes to 'erase' some of those crow's, and we're talking crow's feet. And other fine lines and wrinkles.

Is Genifique er, magnifique?

Some people seem to think so. Lancome says they, too, have the beauty science to back the results up:

The Genifique treatment boasts 10 years of research and 7 patents behind it. And delivers impressive results. Within a couple of weeks, testers showed nearly a 100 percent improvement in all categories. We're told that results will be published in scientific literature later in 2009.

The Lancome website describes Genifique like this:

"Today, for every woman, Lancôme creates our 1st Youth Activator - GÉNIFIQUE. Now, boost genes' activity2 and stimulate the production of youth proteins.3
See visibly younger skin in just 7 days.
1 Activate skin's youthful look."

StriVectin Introduces 3 More Anti-Aging Beauty Items

Here we go again.....The anti-aging specialists at Klein-Becker USA never seem to sleep. The smart people who brought us StriVectin-SD for stretch marks and smooth facial skin, have recently added 3 more beauty treatments to their anti-aging arsenal.

Do any of these StriVectin beauty items actually work?

Good question. These Klein-Becker USA beauty treatments are sold in all the right places. In other words, excellent marketing! Fine places like Sephora and Bloomingdale's, Macy's and Dillard's, and expensive spas, all successfully push the StriVectin items at their counters, and sales always seem to be brisk.

We have read review after review about StriVectin's anti-aging treatments. Some folks love the products and others claim the benefits are little, if any.

Meantime, StriVectin is sold around the globe, and there are many fans. So it wouldn't hurt to at least try a tube of their anti-aging cream.

StriVectin's 3 new anti-aging kids on the block:

1. StriVectin Instant Facial Sculpting Cream ($79). The treatment is advertised to not only "reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow's feet, but also accentuate your cheekbones and jaw line, as it lifts, tightens, and tones your skin."

2. StriVectin Facial Anti-Oxidant ($109). This beauty product targets aging skin by "preventing and repairing thinning skin, loss of elasticity, age spots and wrinkles such as smile lines and crow's feet. Idebenone-free."

3. StriVectin-SD for Oily Skin ($135). Just like the original StriVectin-SD, this treatment is designed for oily skin. It contains "the same benefits of the original, but now specially formulated to balance skin oil levels. The new formulation firms, hydrates, and elasticizes without leaving skin oily."

Island Michael Kors Bermuda: Take Us Into Spring

Hey...we've had it with the snow. And yes, we still have some on the ground, slow-wwwwwly melting away. We're upper east coast.

We cannot wait for spring! And that's why we are pointing our heads and nostrils in a new direction.

Classic designer Michael Kors is transporting us to an exotic locale. And if anyone can take us there, it's Michael Kors.

We are head-over-heels-in-love with his newest fragrance:

Island Michael Kors Bermuda ($62, at fine stores everywhere).

The fragrance is inspired by the lovely pink beaches of beautiful and balmy Bermuda.

Talk about tropical glamour, this scent has it----
Fragrance type: breezy floral
Top notes: freesia, hibiscus, watery green notes, cassis
Middle notes: tiare blossoms, pink peony, passion flower
Low notes: driftwood, soft skin accord, cedarwood

Island Michael Kors Bermuda also includes in the collection, a warm tropical-scented Moisturizing Body Lotion ($28). And a nice light shade of pink Lip Gloss ($12).

We dream of breezy spring and hot summer days. And any scent with exotic freesia and hibiscus are just the ticket to a lush paradise.

Good-bye winter.

ProNamel Keeps Teeth Youthful And Re-Hardens Enamel

If you like to eat and drink, well, let's face it, your teeth are constantly under attack.

It's all those delicious acidic foods and drinks that we enjoy every day:

Sodas. Fruit. Orange juice. Wine. Etc.

Food/Drink
pH Range
Apples
3.5 - 3.9
Oranges
2.8 - 4.0
Tomatoes
3.7 - 4.7
Coffee
2.4 - 3.3
Tea (black)
4.2
Wine
2.3 - 3.8
Soda
2.7 - 3.5

And then, of course, brushing your teeth wears away the softened enamel. Abrasive brushing is the worst thing you can do. And soon, the very bottom of your teeth take on an almost clear appearance. You can just about 'see through' them.

We are very interested in trying Sensodyne ProNamel. The paste is specially designed to re-harden your teeth's enamel. Keeps teeth youthful. Has fluoride for cavity protection. Guards against further acid erosion. Minimizes tooth sensitivity.

"Sensodyne® ProNamel™ can't reverse any dental problems already caused by acid wear. But it can harden your enamel and help to protect it from further damage," according to the website, http://www.pronamel.com/.

By the way, you can always resort to sipping your acidic drinks through a straw. That helps, too.

PronNamel costs about $5.49 at drugstores.

Super Beauty Tips We Didn't Know About Gray Hair

The stunning gray-haired woman in the photo is none other than famous model Carmen del Orifice.

Carmen del Orifice is in her 70s and still rockin' the big hair! An ageless beauty, and with gray, silver hair.

We have learned plenty about gray hair, from a recent article in the February 2009 issue, www.goodhousekeeping.com.

Yes, we will admit to some gray hair. In fact, we have super stubborn gray hair. The unfair kind that sometimes doesn't pick up the hair color on all the strands, making life for us quite challenging in the hair department.

But we learned some super beauty tips, valuable ones for all our gray-haired gals.

We found this little nugget most interesting:

"Childhood photos will help predict your future shade of gray: Black hair turns steel-gray. Redheads and brunettes have more gold undertones mixed with their silver, and childhood blondes tend to go white."

When shampooing gray hair, remember, this type of hair is like a sponge. Very porous and soaks up everything you put in it. So use shampoos with white or clear formulas, says hair expert Barbara Lhotan. Or try a purple-tinted shampoo to tone down brassiness, like Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Shampoo ($6.49, drugstores).

As many of you know, gray hair can be stubborn because of its coarseness and wiry texture. Best to arm yourself with a good conditioner to keep your silver locks under control. Barbara Lhotan suggests a conditioner meant for curly or coarse hair. We suggest TRESemme European Conditioner Vitamin E Moisture Rich (32 fl.oz., $5.89, drugstores).

Meantime, if you've let your silver strands grow and grow and tossed out the hair color bottles, good for you. The upkeep is easier, we're sure.

Enjoy your gray hair, because so many women, both young and older, wear it so well.

Is Mederma A Waste Of Time For Treating Scars

Most of us have some kind of scar. It could be from acne, an accident, a surgery, an illness, etc.

And although the beauty science and technology is pretty impressive these days, erasing a scar completely, might not be possible. But---we can get pretty close. We can make scars almost invisible.

Many people wear their scars like a badge of honor. We once knew a frat boy in college named Chip with a sexy scar across his cheek. The girls were attracted to him because of his scar.

And look at one of our favorite beauties, Padma Lakshmi. The former model and current host of Bravo's 'Top Chef' reality show, has a 7-inch reminder of the serious car accident she was in at age 14.

Padma grew to accept her 'imperfection,' and the scar that runs along her right arm is one she wears proudly. "I love my scar," she often says.

But there are also many times, one does not love their scar, and hoping for a miracle cream to rub it out permanently. That's where popular, topical treatments like Mederma ($29.99, drugstores), are often used.

But is Mederma a waste of time for treating scars? And is surgery the only best way to greatly minimize a scar's appearance?

Some specialists recommend applying Mederma to fresh scars. And yet there are other doctors who claim the topical treatment does little to wipe out scars.

What we can tell you, is that Mederma is actually made with 'onion extract,' believe it or not. That allium cepa, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and to improve collagen organization in a rabbit ear model.

However, there are no human studies that show onion extract improves the appearance of scars more than petroleum jelly, according to an article here: http://tiny.cc/mqNjP.

In defense of Mederma, however, the product claims to soften and smooth scars, and that we believe is true.

Meantime, your best bet is heading into a plastic surgeon's office. There are several exciting, but costly treatments that can greatly minimize the appearance and depth of scars:

Laser skin re-surfacing
Laser scar removal
Microdermabrasion
Fat transfer
Collagen injections
Chemical peels
Steroid injections

Not All Hollywood A-Listers Run For Botox To Zap Wrinkles

Actress Jennifer Aniston is back in the news again.

And yeah, once more, it has to do with John Mayer. According to http://www.people.com/, the couple has split again. And John Mayer supposedly broke up with Jen, as he did the first time around.

But we are not here to hold anyone's hands. We're simply here to prove to all the doubters out there, that not all of the Hollywood A-listers run for Botox to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles.

Closely examine 40-year-old Jennifer Aniston in a candid shot at the Academy Awards Show back in February of this year.

Please look at Jen's forehead. Hmmm. We see some almost pronounced wrinkles dancing across her lovely forehead.

Some of you might say, sure, she doesn't Botox her forehead, but Botoxes her crow's feet and the two lines between her eyes, or the glabellas.

Who's to say. We believe Jennifer Aniston when she has repeated over and over again, that she is not a Botox user.

In fact, we just picked up this little nugget from http://www.imnotobsessed.com/:

"I tried Botox once and it was really not good for me. I felt like I had a weight on my head," Jennifer Aniston remarked. "I think it makes women look older. Harder. The warmth in their faces goes away. You see women and you know they’re not young, but you can’t tell how old they are. That’s what stopped me."

We've written about Botox before (April 15, 2008 BeautyTipToday article):

It’s been noted that Botox procedures have jumped some 400% in the last several years. Botox cosmetic is really from the botulinum toxin type and continues to hold the distinction of number one injectable in the United States. Dr. Frederic Brandt isn’t surprised at its popularity.

“Botox cosmetic has revolutionized our field,” Dr. Brandt says. “Botox is easy to administer, safe and effective, and not only reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, but also has the effect of preventing the future formation of wrinkles and fine lines if used appropriately.”

We know that Hollywood beauties all flock together to their derms for Botox. But it is refreshing, that not all the A-listers go for the sting of the needle to stay perpetually youthful.

Jennifer Aniston can really make an honest expression.

Salma Cover Girl For Robert Vetica's New Great Hair Book

We are so excited about celebrity hairstylist Robert Vetica and his wonderful new book, Good To Great Hair, that we made a little faux pas yesterday. And we wish to correct it.

We mistakenly suggested, that actress Salma Hayek and Robert Vetica had authored the book together.

Instead, these are the masterful words and knowledge of super L.A. stylist Robert Vetica. A foreword is presented by Salma Hayek, along with an introduction by actress Debra Messing.

Putting that all aside, Good To Great Hair, is a really beautiful book. Robert Vetica has more than 25 years of experience and quite a Who's Who of lovely celebrity clients. In addition to Salma and Debra, there are more---Mariah Carey. Naomi Watts. Shakira. Hilary Swank.

You can pick up this new hair-how-to at popular bookstores like-- http://www.barnesandnoble.com/, at the online price of $19.99.

Robert Vetica's book is filled with incredible tips such as: what’s in his styling and tool kits; how he uses his simple arsenal to create unforgettable looks for the red carpet and runways in 20 minutes flat; how he invents nip-and-tuck magic with small, hidden braids; how he disguises split ends and creates a stellar shine; how to transform lifeless hair into a lush, voluminous mane with the genius of clip-on extensions; how he saves time by refreshing a style – and not starting from scratch; along with extensive how-to guides.

In honor of Salma Hayek's participation in Good To Great Hair, Fair Winds Press will make a donation in support of UNICEF's efforts to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal tetanus.

Meantime, we are still raving about Salma Hayek's glossy and gorgeous hair. The cover shot for Robert Vetica's book says it all.

And as we showed you yesterday, Robert Vetica gave Salma's hair high-voltage-shine with Moroccanoil beauty products. Very unique items you can learn about in his new book, Good To Great Hair.

How To Get Shiny Healthy Hair Like Salma Hayek

Actress Salma Hayek is an exotic beauty, and at age 42, she's doing something right.

We especially like her shiny, healthy hair!!!

She is pictured here at the recent book-launching party for Good to Great Hair by Robert Vetica in Hollywood.

Robert Vetica and Salma Hayek put out the book together, and she serves as the cover girl for the how-to on beautiful hair. Good to Great Hair is available at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ for the online price of $19.99.

So what is Salma's secret to such shiny, healthy hair? We know that Hollywood beauties go through quite a lot of hair trauma, especially being colored, blown-dry, flat-ironed, heat-curled, straightened, all under very hot movie and television lighting. And so on.

Argan oil.

We spoke about the almost magical qualities of this beauty oil from Morocco recently, in our article on the 7 Breakthrough Ingredients for Super Skin in 2009:
And this oil is even spectacular for strong, beautiful hair.
Stylist Robert Vetica told PeopleStyleWatch how he gave Salma Hayek shiny and amazing hair.

How to Do It
1: Separate hair into small sections.
2: Add Moroccanoil Treatment and Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to each.
3: Use round brush to blow dry sections.
4: Let hair fall and mist with Moroccanoil Gold Glimmer Shine Spray.

There's the secret: Moroccanoil. According to their website, http://www.moroccanoil.com/, this argan oil formula can do wonders for a head of hair:

Restores shine and softness to dull lifeless hair. Strengthens brittle hair.● Promotes healing and provides nourishment to hair damaged by coloring and styling.● Creates an optimal balance for the hair and scalp.● Nourishes the scalp (alleviates itchy, dry scalp)● Protects against UV damage and other environmental factors.● Reduces drying time and speeds up styling time.

Jose Eber has maintained many a pretty head of hair in the Hollywood business. He has always created the loveliest hairstyles for Jaclyn Smith. So we applaud her line of wigs and clip-ons with Jose:

"The collection includes over 20 styles: full-coverage wigs; clever volumizers that integrate with existing hair to boost volume; luxurious falls; and add-on pieces to create polished ponytails and easy updos. Jaclyn even personally selected the collection’s color palette, from her rich Blended Colors (like her signature Caramelized Brown shade) to her exclusive Rooted Colors (available in her wig styles), which begin slightly darker at the roots for a more natural look."

Bad Economy Hair Tips For Big Spender Jen & Us

Who are we to cast judgment on big box office draw Jennifer Aniston?!
The bad economy has all of us looking for spare change under the couch seats these days.

Except for Miss Jen. Hair gossip has been buzzing for days everywhere about Jennifer Aniston's sky-high hairstyle bill for the London premiere of movie hit Marley & Me.

Now let's be fair here. The movie has brought in some $166 million worldwide. Wow!

Jen's cost to blow and flat-iron her gorgeous sleek, blonde locks over in London----$56,792. Oh, yeah!

The crazy thing is, Jen insisted on having her fav hairstylist Chris McMillian accompany her to London. First class flight to London. Expensive hotels. Expert blow-drying and superb flat-ironing, we are sure. Plus a private jet with Jen to the Paris premier. And so on. More blow-outs and flat-irons.

You get the picture. And the photos here show Jen Aniston at the London premier. She looks lovely, and yes, her hair is pretty. But her hair ain't all that for the hefty pricetag of $56,792!!!

We know, Jen Aniston, an A-list actress, shouldn't have to explain her receipts to anyone, so we can see her point. But we also wonder how insecure this attractive star could be.

Meantime....a couple of hair tips to deal with in this bad economy:

DO buy hair coloring touch-up kits:
In between big and costly hair coloring sessions at the salon, try to cover your own roots.
Pros love Clairol's Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up ($7, drugstores).

Or try Instant Grey Touch Up ($5.99, http://www.beautyboutique.com/). Comes in a mascara-like tube. All you do is brush away the grey. Comes in 5 shades.

DO clip beauty coupons in the Sunday papers from drugstores. Then wait for a big sale. You can get great savings on shampoos, conditioners, hair color, hairstyling products.

DO try the TRESemme hair care line:
Tons of wonderful shampoos, volumizers, hairsprays, and more, at decent prices. Big bottles for cheap!! And the fine folks at TRESemme are always introducing new lines of hair products. The latest:
TRESemme 24-Hour Body Collection. Foaming Mousse. Root spray. Sculpting spray. Weightless creme. etc.

Naked Naturals Shampoo Makes Hair 7x Stronger

One of our girlfriends told us about this shampoo line---Naked Naturals. And we stress 'all-natural.'

No harsh this or that. Nothing synthetic. And certainly, not a bit of artificial anything.

By the way, our friend colors her shoulder-length very blonde hair. And it is thick and shiny.

She uses the Naked Naturals Awapuhi & Lavender Color-Treated Hair Shampoo ($8.49, at local drugstores and supermarkets everywhere).

Awapuhi is a powerful plant protein, that when combined with the beauty and medicinal properties of lavender, make for a super hair shampoo. Naked Naturals claims that your hair will become up to 7x stronger.

The Hawaiian awapuhi fortifies your strands from the inside out. And the lovely lavender stimulates hair growth. Of course, the shampoo smells divine, and many say, actually stops hair-breakage. We like that!

There is also a Naked Naturals Awapuhi & Lavender Color-Treated Hair Conditioner
($8.49).

In addition, you can also try:

Naked Naturals Citrus & Keratin Shampoo, and Conditioner
Naked Naturals Aloe Vera & Chamomile Shampoo, and Conditioner

New Adonia LegTone Serum Zaps Cellulite In 9 Minutes?

We would be doing you all a disservice, by not keeping you up-to-date with all the new beauty and skin care products appearing on the market.

And here is yet one more:
Another promising cellulite serum. This one called Adonia LegTone Serum by Green Island Labs, swears to go to work in just 9 minutes, to improve your dimpled fat cellulite by 47%.

Look, we've done a few articles in the past, here at BeautyTipToday, and we have interviewed the dimpled fat experts like Anushka and Dr. Murad. And both professionals have told us, that there is "no way to permanently get rid of cellulite."

We checked out www.adonialegtone.com, and this is how they explain their miracle cellulite formula:

"Using the latest Plant Stem Cell technology combined with the time-tested wisdom of 23 organic Greek botanicals; Adonia's LegTone™ Serum helps to re-awaken and reactivate dormant or less active skin stem cells back to the levels they were in your 20s. By rejuvenating your existing skin stem cells, you can help reduce the appearance of cellulite naturally. Healthy stem cells cause the skin to regenerate and renew itself naturally."

But Anushka and Dr. Murad both believe there are treatments to reduce the appearance of cellulite and to prevent new cellulite formation.

Okay, having said that, maybe Adonia LegTone Serum can make our thighs 'look' more smooth and toned temporarily.

However, there is something a little off with the science Green Island Labs is claiming to use, acoording to one expert, who said this to the Daily Mail of Great Britain:

"Prof Liam Dolan, an expert in plant stem cells at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, said he was surprised to hear that stem cells could regenerate human skin stem cells.

'There may be chemicals in plant stem cells that stimulate animal stem cells, but if that was the case I wouldn't expert to learn about it from a cosmetic company website - it would be front page news of a major science journal,' he said.
'If the product worked as claimed, the developers deserved a Nobel Prize', he said."

What we do like about this new cellulite zapper, is Green Island Lab's 60-day-money-back-guarantee. The cost is $87, and includes FREE FedEx shipping.

A Little Lemon Juice Can Brighten And Smooth Skin

We love any beauty product we can get our hands on. But we also adore natural beauty products, too.

Sometimes, you don't have to spend a lot, to freshen up your skin, for instance. And that's where we turn to Marcia Kilgore, skin expert and founder of Bliss Spa, and her newest beauty venture appearing this May at Target called Soap & Glory Skin Care (an expansion of her current bath & body items).

The 40-ish blonde hair bob beauty with the amazing bone structure, has been talking about lemon juice. And how the citric acid in it, can do some amazing things for your skin.

According to Marcia Kilgore, lemon juice can help exfoliate your winter skin. And she gave this advice to http://www.fashion.elle.com/:

"As for your face, it depends on your skin type but I would recommend exfoliating two to four times a week for oily skin and less often for dry/sensitive types. Remember to pay particular attention to blackheads, blocked pores, flaky foreheads and oily chins. Want to pump up your scrub? Squirt a little lemon juice into your favorite facial scrub to boost its natural brightening power and exfoliating action. (Lemon juice contains citric acid, one of the five alpha hydroxy acids that dissolve the glue that keeps dead cells stuck to your skin.)"

And that's not all this tart, little juice can do. Marcia Kilgore also uses nature's lemons to diminish the appearance of brown spots. She says that "a daily dab of lemon juice will lighten them. Citric acid is magic."

As far as exfoliating the dry, winter skin from your body, stay away from scrubbers like loofahs. We got this advice from famous plastic surgeon Dr. Michelle Copeland, who advised us back in June, to throw away our loofahs and washcloths because these bath items break the normal skin barrier, and bacteria can easily sneak in.

Marcia Kilgore tends to agree with Dr. Copeland.

"Exfoliation should be a regular feature of your body and facial routine all year round. Incorporate a body exfoliator into your shower routine at least three times weekly to slough away dead skin cells quicker. Not only will it simultaneously stimulate circulation, your after-shower moisture lotions will sink in more readily. And by the way, just say no to loofahs. Once used, they are loaded with bacteria build-up.

Try Soap & Glory Sugar Crush, made with smashed brown sugar, sweet lime, almond oil and macadamia grains."

How To Grow A More Attractive Set Of Healthy Nails

Our nails are not pretty. And don't look as attractive as a set of nails should. Okay, we said it.

At the moment, some of our nails are chipped. A couple with vertical ridges. And barely growing. At least our nails are short and somewhat neat. Well, a few are, at least.

What's going on?!

We've all heard how beneficial olive oil is for growing strong fingernails. We've been enjoying it in our Mediterranean diet for years. Why hasn't it helped us?

Maybe, soaking hands and feet in olive oil, to be exact. This old and simple method softens rough cuticles and nourishes nails.

But why the chipping, vertical ridges, weak/brittleness?

We did a little research and found some great nail tips from the well-respected Mayo Clinic:

Your nails are made up of laminated layers of a protein called keratin, which is also found in your hair and skin.

And it takes a fingernail about 4 to 6 months to fully regenerate. That's a slow-www process.

"Weak or brittle fingernails can be a challenge to toughen up. The following tips can help you protect them, making your nails less likely to split or break.

Keep your nails short, square shaped and slightly rounded on top.
Trim brittle nails after a bath or a 15-minute hand soak in bath oil.
Then apply a moisturizer.
Moisturize your nails and cuticles at bedtime and cover them with cotton gloves.
Apply a nail hardener, but avoid products containing toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde. These chemicals can cause redness or irritate the skin.
Don't use nail polish remover more than twice a month. Instead, touch up the polish. When you do need a remover, avoid those that use acetone, which dries nails.
Repair splits or tears with nail glue or clear polish."

And we have also spoken to a few nail technicians who highly recommend brushing on Solar Oil by Creative Nail Design ($7.50, http://www.ulta.com/). Nail pros swear by this easy, quick step routine for a more attractive set of healthy nails.

Solar Oil is formulated with an effective blend of jojoba, rice bran and sweet almond oils infused with the power of vitamin E. Solar Oil is said to penetrate deeply into your cuticles and nails to prevent them from becoming brittle and to promote healthy nail growth.

7 Breakthrough Ingredients For Super Skin In 2009

(photo from lifeskincell website)

We all have issues when it comes to our skin, especially when we get beyond age 30.

Every day, we at BeautyTipToday, try to read and research continuously for the newest and most intelligent scientific advancements in skin care.

And now here are 7 breakthrough ingredients for super skin in 2009:

We dug this beauty information up at the Los Angeles Times, http://www.latimes.com/. Reporter Alexandra Drosu did the heavy lifting for us, and surveyed 25 experts in the skin care field. And here are the lucky 7 ingredients to look for in your skin care regimen:

1. Growth factor.
Ingredients like TGF beta (Transforming Growth Factor beta) can potentially encourage cells to produce collagen. As we all know by now, boosting collagen improves wrinkles. Scientists are still trying to figure out which combo of growth factors works most effectively.

"Status: A couple of products, including Topix Citrix Serum with Growth Factor ($104; http://www.skinstore.com/) and Neocutis Bio-restorative Skin Cream with PSP ($150; http://www.amazon.com/ ), are breaking ground."

2. Carnosine
A naturally occuring amino acid found in our muscle tissue. It is able to slow-www down the aging process.

"Status: Increasingly, companies are incorporating carnosine in their skin-care products. One place to find it: Shiseido Benefiance NutriPerfect Night Cream Carnosine DP ($92; http://www.nordstrom.com/)."

3. Sirtuin activators.
Enzymes that can possibly repair DNA. But these sirtuins need to be activated by reservatrol, which can be found in red wine and green tea.

"Status: “Resveratrol still has a long way to go in clinical studies,” says Dr. Vermén Verallo-Rowell. But coupled with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s worth keeping an eye on.

4. Argan oil.
This wonder oil from Morocco is full of one of the richest sources of Vitamin E, keeping skin hydrated and balanced.

"Status: Argan oil is being tapped as a natural alternative to synthetic ingredients. One source: Kaeline Vitality Day Serum ($38; http://www.xandrarenouvelle.com/)

5. Gatuline expression.
An extract from a plant that contains muscle relaxing properties. Someday, maybe the need for Botox will disappear.

"Status: Available. Bieux Skin Power Lift & Repair Serum ($125; http://www.sephora.com/) and Tri-Aktiline Instant Deep Wrinkle Filler ($39.50; http://www.goodskindermcare.com/) are among those incorporating Gatuline Expression in products."

6. Acai berry.
You've heard of this little berry that resembles a grape. Right now we can only drink it. They're working on a serum. This little berry holds big promise---rich in anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids.

"Status: The berry’s blue color has proven challenging topically, but several skin-care companies are working on formulations that don’t stain skin. In the meantime, try drinking an açai juice, such as Sambazon ($3.59; http://www.sambazon.com/)."

7. Astaxanthin.
Found in salmon and algae. This is a retinoid form of vitamin A and has all the typical benefits of retinoids — providing antioxidant protection and stimulating cell renewal.”

"Status: More clinical trials are necessary to prove its effectiveness."

Lose Weight: No Sugar Soda Celsius Burns Up To 100 Calories

We just caught up with this celeb-secret calorie burning soda last evening, when we saw a television commercial.

Celsius. Great name for a 100-Calories burning soda in a can, that speeds up your metabolism!

So, does the stuff actually help you lose weight?

Who knows. Katie Holmes, wife of Tom Cruise, who's been looking ultra-slim these days, supposedly enjoys the drink. Her bodyguard was seen walking with her holding a bottle of Celsius, believed to be Katie's.

The science on Celsius is there, and we will try and explain it in layman's terms. Meantime, at least the soda does not have:
carbs
sugar
chemical preservatives
or all that fructose syrup

According to the celsius.com website:

"One SINGLE SERVING (12 oz can) of Celsius burns up to 100 calories, by increasing metabolism on average by 12% for up to a 3 hour period."

And the clinical studies have beem going on for quite some time, since Celsius has been around since 2004.

"A second clinical research study completed by the University of Oklahoma and published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition in February 2008 reviewed the acute effects drinking a single serving of Celsius and reconfirmed that over a 3-hour period, subjects consuming a single serving of Celsius burned 65% more calories than those consuming the placebo beverage and burned an average of more than 100 calories. The data further showed that women in the study increased their metabolic rate by an average of 14%, while men increased their metabolic rate by an average of 8% during the 3-hour period following consumption of one 12 oz. bottle of Celsius."

At least the drink is healthier for you than a can of cola. And it couldn't hurt. Plus, it comes in lots of yummy flavors:

Cola. Ginger-ale. Lemon-lime, Orange. Wild Berry. Green Tea Raspberry Acai. Green Tea Peach Mango.

Celsius is sold almost nationwide at most Walgreens and Vitamin Shoppe stores, as well as many local supermarkets. It costs about $48 a case.

Think of it, as a work-out in a can. Go for the burn, baby!
